Ryan Papenhuyzen has delivered in the clutch to lead Melbourne past South Sydney in a golden-point thriller.

The Storm fullback stood tall to secure the victory with an 84th minute field goal after a back-and-forth tussle at Accor Stadium.

South Sydney winger Alex Johnston scored four tries and Latrell Mitchell produced a superb kick for Tyrone Munro to send the match to extra-time. Melbourne, however, kept their heads amid a frustrating evening to prevail in golden point.

The win helped the Storm draw level on the ladder with the Warriors after Andrew Webster's men suffered a shock loss to the Panthers in the opening game of Super Saturday.

Penrith played without their five Origin stars, while the Warriors were without Queensland forward Kurt Capewell. The hosts lost Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Marata Niukore to injury in the 28-18 defeat.

The second match of the day was also a thriller, with Brodie Jones scoring in the 79th minute to lift Newcastle past the Dolphins 26-20.

The scores were tied at 20-20 and the clash looked destined for golden point before the try, with fullback Kalyn Ponga producing an outstanding performance just three days after Origin II.

Newcastle lost Fletcher Sharpe to a head knock midway through the second half, while Dolphins winger Jack Bostock suffered a suspected ACL tear.

Rabbitohs v Storm – Round 16, 2025

Papenhuyzen ices it

Full-time: Ryan Papenhuyzen is the hero for the Storm, the fullback nailing a field goal to secure a thrilling win. The kick was Papenhuyzen's second attempt to extra-time, with his first shot charged down. The ball deflected straight to Tyran Wishart and Melbourne had a second chance. This time, Papenhuyzen made no mistake and the Storm players are more relieved than elated escaped with the two competition points. Rabbitohs 24 - Storm 25.

A great take from Anderson under a huge Latrell bomb

End of regulation: We are off to golden point. Latrell Mitchell had a chance to win it for his side, but his field-goal attempt from halfway sailed wide. Melbourne also almost produced a miracle play from the 20m tap, but time ran out before they could pack a scrum. Rabbitohs 24 - Storm 24.

Tyrone Munro Try

76th minute: Latrell Mitchell is a magician. Few players would be willing to do what he just did. With four minutes to play and the ball on the 40m line, early in the tackle count, the Souths fullback produced a perfect grubber for Tyrone Munro. Melbourne's Grant Anderson slipped over and Munro strolled over to score out wide. Mitchell then missed the conversion and we're locked up with 2:43 to play. Rabbitohs 24 - Storm 24.

73rd minute: Things are getting tense at Accor Stadium. Nelson Asofa-Solomona made an error in the set after points to put South Sydney on the attack and they came agonisingly close to scoring. Melbourne held firm, but Jack Wighton looked to have forced a set restart after the referee ruled a grubber produced an accidental offside. Melbourne challenged the ruling, and the bunker concurred, with the Storm taking possession as they attempt to hold on to a four-point lead. Rabbitohs 20 - Storm 24.

Tyran Wishart Try

70th minute: Sua Faalogo take a bow. The winger caught a Latrell Mitchell under heavy pressure, kept his feet, sliced his way through the South Sydney defensive line before linking up with Tyran Wishart to put his team in front. Faalogo has endured a tough evening in defence, but he's brushed it off to produce a game-breaking play. Rabbitohs 20 - Storm 24.

68th minute: The Storm forced a line drop out, however they were not able to reel in the short kick off and the Rabbitohs continue to hold on. Rabbitohs 20 - Storm 18.

66th minute: How quickly things can turn. Harry Grant forced an error to deny South Sydney a scoring opportunity and now Keaon Koloamatangi has collected Cameron Munster high to give the Storm a chance to hit back. Rabbitohs 20 - Storm 18.

64th minute: Jamie Humphreys has just made a crucial play, out-leaping Cameron Munster to catch a bomb in the in-goal and earn his side a seven-tackle set. Nelson Asofa-Solomona was penalised for a shoulder charge a couple of plays later and South Sydney are back on the attack with a chance to extend their lead. Rabbitohs 20 - Storm 18.

Alex Johnston 4th Try

54th minute: This game has had it all. Alex Johnston has his fourth of the game, the veteran plucking a Jahrome Hughes pass out of the air and racing 45 metres to score. Johnston had no choice but to go for the intercept, with two unmarked players outside him and he executed it to perfection. It's the first time a player has scored four tries against the Storm and the Rabbitohs are back in front. Rabbitohs 20 - Storm 18.

Grant Anderson Try

52nd minute: Johnston's third try has woken the Storm from their slumber and they've quickly found their stride. A seven-tackle set provided the platform for Melbourne to work down the field and Grant Anderson finished it off in the left corner. Rabbitohs 14 - Storm 18.

Alex Johnston 3rd Try

47th minute: This game has well and truly turned. The Rabbitohs are full of running and Tyrone Munro made a break down the right edge. Munro was dragged down, but South Sydney immediately shifted left and Latrell Mitchell hit Alex Johnston with another superb pass to send the veteran over for the 16th hat-trick of his career. Mitchell then nailed the conversion from the sideline to hand his side their first lead of the game. Rabbitohs 14 - Storm 12.

Alex Johnston 2nd Try

44th minute: That's not going to make Craig Bellamy happy. Jack Howarth has been called for a roll ball when attempting a play the ball and the Rabbitohs have capitalised on the opportunity. Latrell Mitchell and Alex Johnston combined for the second time tonight, with the veteran winger inching closer to Ken Irvine's all-time try-scoring record. Howarth's mistake was Melbourne's 10th error of the night and came just moments after Bellamy expressed his disappointment with the number of errors in the first half. Rabbitohs 8 - Storm 12.

Munster mistimed his exit from the tunnel

Kick off: We are back for the second half and Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy is looking for an instant reaction from his side. The Storm were superb through the opening 10 minutes, but errors crept into their game and Bellamy did not hide his frustration at half-time. South Sydney, to their credit, worked their way back into the game and Wayne Bennett will know exactly what to say to help his side finish over the top of their opponents. Rabbitohs 4 - Storm 12.

Arrow saves a try on half time

Half-time: There were warning signs early for the Rabbitohs, but they've aimed up defensively in the final minutes of the half. A Latrell Mitchell error handed Melbourne a full set on the attack and Grant Anderson looked set to score in the corner before Jai Arrow forced the ball loose to keep the deficit to eight at the break. Rabbitohs 4 - Storm 12.

33rd minute: Melbourne have come off the boil since their blistering start and a frustrated Craig Bellamy has gone for a lap around the coach's box after another error. The Storm had produced some good attack to work their way into attacking territory, however a deflected grubber was followed by a knock on and the Rabbitohs held firm. Rabbitohs 4 - Storm 12.

27th minute: The Rabbitohs are on the board and it's their most decorated try scorer who has crossed to keep his team in the contest. Latrell Mitchell looked up, identified the space and threw a brilliant cut-out pass to send Alex Johnston over for try number 203.

Alex Johnston Try

Meanwhile hooker Siliva Havili has left the field with left hamstring tightness but South Sydney expect him to return for his second stint later in the night. Rabbitohs 4 - Storm 12.

Ruthless defence from the Storm

16th minute: The Rabbitohs threatened, but Melbourne ultimately held firm and Ryan Papenhuyzen produced a spectacular pick up to secure possession. Melbourne spilled the ball a couple of plays later to hand South Sydney another opportunity but the Storm's defence was too good. Rabbitohs 0 - Storm 12.

14th minute: The tide has started to shift a little bit for the Rabbitohs and they have earned their first attacking opportunity of the contest. A try here will provide a big confidence boost. Rabbitohs 0 - Storm 12.

Jahrome Hughes Try

6th minute: Danger signs for the Rabbitohs, with the Storm going 100 metres to score in the set immediately after points. An offload and some quick hands saw Grant Anderson streak down the left sideline before he kicked infield for Jahrome Hughes, who got a perfect bounce and scored under the posts. Rabbitohs 0 - Storm 12.

Harry Grant Try

4th minute: Melbourne have enjoyed a dream start in Sydney, with Harry Grant strolling through after running from dummy half. A Euan Aitken error put the Storm on the attack and it didn't take them long to capitalise. The Rabbitohs must tighten up their defence if they want to finish with the win tonight. Rabbitohs 0 - Storm 6.

Kick off: We are underway at Accor Stadium with Wayne Bennett looking to snap a 14-game losing streak against Craig Bellamy. Keaon Koloamatangi has the first carry of the game, the forward remarkably playing just six days after suffering a facial fracture. Rabbitohs 0 - Storm 0.

Late Mail

Rabbitohs: Coach Wayne Bennett confirmed fullback Latrell Mitchell will back up following Wednesday's Origin clash and captain the side. Keaon Koloamatangi will also play less than a week after suffering a facial fracture, and he has been named in the front row in the 24-hour update. However, Cody Walker (groin) and Campbell Graham (back spasms) will wait at least another week before making their returns. The duo were initially named in the extended squad, but Bennett dropped out on Friday. English playmaker Lewis Dodd also dropped out of the 17 despite being initially named in the No.6 jumper, with Jack Wighton shifting to five-eighth, Euan Aitken moving to centre and Jai Arrow dropping back from the frontrow to secondrow. No further changes in Saturday's final team update, with Lewis Dodd the 18th man.

Storm: Maroons winger Xavier Coates will not back up, but Cameron Munster, Harry Grant, Trent Loiero and Stefano Utoikamanu will play for the Storm. There has been a late reshuffle, however, with both Loiero and Utoikamanu shifting to the bench in the final team update. Tui Kamikamica will now start at prop and Nelson Asofa-Solomona comes into lock. Alec MacDonald will make his return from a quad injury after being elevated to the interchange on Friday. Bronson Garlick is 18th man.

Dolphins v Knights at HBF Park, Perth

NRL Press Conference: Dolphins v Knights- Round 16, 2025

Dolphins v Knights – Round 16, 2025

Full-time: The kick off is too deep, Dom Young takes the catch and the Knights have a much-needed victory. Kalyn Ponga was spectacular backing up just three days after Wednesday's State of Origin contest, while Bradman Best also showed why he's considered one of the best centres in the NRL. Dolphins 20 - Knights 26.

Brodie Jones Try

80th minute: This time there is no denying the Knights and it looks like they are going to escape with a spectacular victory. Jack Cogger put up a bomb, which Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow was unable to reel in. Newcastle picked up the loose ball, kept it alive and Brodie Jones defied a desperate attempt of tackle to reach out and ground the ball. There will be four seconds left on the clock for the kick-off. Dolphins 20 - Knights 26

Oh no! The last pass was called forward

75th minute: The Knights have gone from elation to devastation. Kalyn Ponga made the bold move to run the ball on the last, before Bradman Best put a handy kick through. The Knights regathered, Ponga threw a flick pass and James Schiller threw the ball in field to Jayden Brailey who thought he had scored under the posts untouched. The last pass, however, was ruled forward and the Dolphins have another life. Dolphins 20 - Knights 20.

70th minute: We are into the final 10 minutes, with the scores locked at 20-all. Now is the time for the big names to take centre-stage, with Kalyn Ponga looking to step up for the Knights. For the Dolphins, Isaiya Katoa has shown an ability to handle the big moments despite his youth and he'll have his mind on a potential field goal opportunity. Dolphins 20 - Knights 20.

64th minute: There are plenty more twists left in this contest, with Dolphins forward Francis Molo spilling the ball on the first play after the kick off. Kalyn Ponga has taken charge of the Knights attack tonight and he's produced another sublime grubber for Bradman Best, who pounced to score his second of the night. Dane Gagai missed the conversion and we are all locked up. Dolphins 20 - Knights 20.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow Try

60th minute: The Dolphins have produced a long-range effort to break through the channel Dane Gagai usually defends. The centre had less than 30 seconds left in the sin bin. Jake Averillo burst through the defensive line before sending Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow over for a try. Gagai will now return to the field, while the Dolphins have welcomed back Oryn Keeley after he passed his HIA. The Knights, however, have been dealt a blow, with Fletcher Sharpe failing his HIA. Dolphins 20 - Knights 16.

Jamayne Isaako Try

55th minute: Newcastle did a good job holding on initially but the weight of possession and the extra man ultimately proved too great. Jamayne Isaako was the man to score in the right corner, with halfback Isaiya Katoa playing a big role in the try. Isaako's sideline conversion was waved away and the Dolphins continue to trail by two. Dane Gagai has five more minutes in the sin bin. Dolphins 14 - Knights 16.

Unsure how Ponga stopped Averillo here...

51st minute: We've had another twist in this contest, with Dane Gagai sent to the sin bin for a professional foul. The Dolphins made a break down the left edge and Gagai held back Herbie Farnworth to prevent him from acting as a support runner. The Dolphins now have a set of six in the attacking 20m zone. Dolphins 10 - Knights 16.

Marshall-King stops a flying Sharpe

48th minute: There's plenty happening at HBF Park, with Dolphins forward Oryn Keeley and Knights five-eighth Fletcher Sharpe both leaving the field for Head Injury Assessments after suffering head knocks in separate incidents. Dolphins 10 - Knights 16.

43rd minute: The Dolphins have provided an update on winger Jack Bostock, with initial tests suggesting he has torn his ACL. Scans will be required to confirm the diagnosis, with Bostock set to miss the remainder of the season if it is an ACL rupture. Dolphins 10 - Knights 16.

Kick-off: We are back for the second half and it's the Dolphins who will have first use of the ball. The hosts will have the wind behind their backs in the second half as they look to reel in the Knights. Newcastle's attack has been significantly better than previous weeks and history suggests they will need more points if they are to finish with the two points tonight. Dolphins 10 - Knights 16.

Half-time: That is half-time in an entertaining game of footy in Perth, with both teams willing to throw the ball around in wet and windy conditions. The Dolphins had a handful of chances to level the scores before the break but Newcastle held firm to maintain a six-point lead. Dolphins 10 - Knights 16.

Connelly Lemuelu Try

32nd minute: Isaiya Katoa take a bow. The Dolphins shaped to go out the back on a left shift, and the Knights defended accordingly, but Katoa had other ideas and hit Connelly Lemuelu with a brilliant short ball to ensure his side made the most of the attacking opportunity. Dolphins - Knights 16.

30th minute: A James Schiller error has put the Dolphins on the attack, with the hosts looking to make the most of this opportunity to close the gap. Newcastle also lost their challenge in the process after they queried the on-field decision of knock on. Dolphins 4 - Knights 16.

27th minute: Concern now for Dolphins winger Jack Bostock, with the youngster falling awkwardly in a tackle and instantly clutching at his right knee. Bostock suffered a low-grade medial ligament injury during the pre-season and sat out the opening two weeks of the campaign. The winger has been helped from the field and we will keep you updated on the injury. Dolphins 4 - Knights 16.

Dominic Young Try

25th minute: Dom Young looks pretty good in a Knights jersey. It's taken the winger just 25 minutes to score in his return to Newcastle after 18 months with the Roosters. The Knights have posed plenty of questions of the Dolphins defence, with James Schiller nearly scoring on the left edge. The ball moved right and Young scored a couple of plays later. Dolphins 4 - Knights 16.

Bradman Best 1st Try

19th minute: Newcastle have hit back in what has quickly developed into a see-sawing contest. Kalyn Ponga's influence has been clear, with the fullback producing a well-timed grubber for centre Bradman Best. Dolphins 4 - Knights 12.

Kodi Nikorima Try

11th minute: The Dolphins have capitalised on the Knights error, with the lethal left edge producing their first try of the match. Herbie Farnworth was again in the thick of the action, sending Jack Bostock away down the sideline. The winger then passed back inside for Kodi Nikorima to score as heavy rain starts to fall in Perth. Dolphins 4 - Knights 6

9th minute: We've had some entertaining end-to-end action throughout the past couple of minutes. Dolphins centre Herbie Farnworth produced an offload to set Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow free. The fullback was dragged down and the hosts turned the ball over on the subsequent play. Newcastle promptly marched down the field, however a forward pass brought the try-scoring opportunity to an end. Dolphins 0 - Knights 6.

Fletcher Sharpe Try

5th minute: The Knights have the opening points of the game, with new recruit Dom Young putting pressure on Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to force an error in a contest for a bomb. The ball spilled out the back and Fletcher Sharpe pounced to put his side in front. Dolphins 0 - Knights 6.

Kick off: We are underway at HBF Park in Perth, with the Dolphins out to continue their recent points spree as they seek four on the trot. Newcastle hope the return of Kalyn Ponga from Origin duties will trigger a change in attacking fortunes, with the Knights struggling to find the tryline this season. Dolphins 0 - Knights 0.

Stat Attack

  • The Dolphins have scored 62 points but have lost both games played in Perth.
  • The Knights have won two of their three games played in Perth but have yet to play at HBF Park.
  • Dolphins centre Herbie Farnworth is on an eight-game try scoring streak.
  • The Knights have the second-best defensive record in the competition.
  • Dolphins winger Jamayne Isaako has scored 62 points in his past three games.

Late Mail

Ray Stone comes into the starting side for the Dolphins an hour before kick-off with Mark Nicholls going to the bench. Aublix Tawha has also been added to the bench for his NRL debut. Maroons star Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow remained in Perth after Origin and will back up.

Kalyn Ponga will also remain in Perth to link up with the Knights. The fullback has been battling an ankle injury in recent weeks but coach Adam O'Brien said he would play against the Dolphins after being rested in the match following Origin I. Fletcher Sharpe has been named at five-eighth after missing last week's game with a calf injury. Newcastle have also received a major boost with Bradman Best on track to complete his comeback from a hamstring injury while Dom Young comes straight into the side in his first game since departing the Roosters.

Panthers: Round 16

Top of the props: Moses Leota (17 runs for 176 metres and 29 tackles) got the better of his old mate James Fisher-Harris (12 runs for 95 metres and 44 tackles) as the four-time defending champs made a huge statement in Auckland.

The premiers had 12 players who ran for more than 100 metres, led by Daine Laurie with 178 metres and Moses Leota with 176. The Panthers have now won three straight and are looking ominous ahead of a Round 17 blockbuster against the Bulldogs.

66 min: Scott Sorensen is placed on report for the second time in the match - once for a hip drop and once for a dangerous tackle.

Blaize Talagi Try

64 min: An intercept by Tom Jenkins gets the Panthers out of trouble and they surge down field to score again through Blaize Talagi, who dances through tackles and slams the ball down. Paul Alamoti converts. Panthers 20-12.

Scott Sorensen 2nd Try

56 min: Scott Sorensen makes it a double when he flies high to bring down a Brad Schneider kick and plunges over to lock us up at 12-12 before Paul Alamoti bangs over his first conversion of the day. Panthers 14-12.

Jacob Laban Try

47 min: Straight from the error the Warriors score when Luke Metcalf puts Jacob Laban into a hole. Adam Pompey steps up for the conversion and knocks it over. Warriors 12-8.

47 min: Matt Eisenhuth returns the favour when he makes a mess of a play the ball and the Warriors go on the attack from 15 metres out.

45 min: With the Warriors pressing the line Leka Halasima comes up with an error and the chance goes begging.

42 min: Paul Alamoti chips over the top, Luke Garner lunges at the ball with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck also in the contest and a line dropout is ruled.

Half-time: The premiers go to the sheds with their noses in front on the back of 55 per cent of possession and two tries to one. Moses Leota led the way up front with 107 metres from 10 runs while Scott Sorensen ran for 100 metres.

39 min: A blow for the Warriors with winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak hobbling off with an ankle injury.

Scott Sorensen 1st Try

38 min: The Panthers regain the lead when Blaize Talagi delivers a superb short ball for Scott Sorensen to power into a hole and score, leaving Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad in his wake. Paul Alamoti misses the conversion. Panthers 8-6.

36 min: The Panthers march up field on the back of a couple of offloads but Brad Schneider comes up with a dropped ball 10 metres out and the home side is off the hook.

34 min: A mistake by Tom Jenkins coming out of his own end hands the Warriors good field position but they come up empty.

What a stop by Laurie

27 min: Daine Laurie comes up with two big defensive plays - cutting down a rampaging Jacob Laban with a great tackle and then sliding in to clean up a grubber.

25 min: A clever grubber by Brad Schneider is cleaned up by Jacob Laban. The Warriors go the short dropout and get the ball back through Jackson Ford.

24 min: Moses Leota gets over the line after regathering a bouncing ball from a bomb but the Warriors scramble and he loses the ball as he tries to ground it. The Panthers keep possession as the first knock on had been by the Warriors in the contest.

Jackson Ford Try

21 min: Luke Metcalf hoists a bomb, Izack Tago puts it down, the ball spills to Jackson Ford and the prop crashes over for the Warriors' first try. Metcalf converts. Warriors 6-4.

Tom Jenkins Try

12 min: Marata Niukore leaves the field for a HIA after a head clash with teammate Moala Graham-Taufa as they attempted a tackle. Niukore fails his HIA and will not return.

11 min: Scott Sorensen goes for the line but is held up by Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad who scrambles well to deny the Panthers back-rower.

7 min: Brad Schneider goes to the line and puts in a neat grubber but Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is perfectly positioned and brings the ball out of the in goal.

Metcalf on target early

3 min: Luke Metcalf comes within inches of a 40-20 but Daine Laurie manages to scramble back and tap the ball back into play.

Late Mail

The Warriors are 1-17 with no late changes. Maroons forward Kurt Capewell will sit out the clash having played in Perth, with the travel logistics too great to overcome. As a result, Moala Graham-Taufa is set for his first game since Round 22 last year as Capewell's replacement in the centres.

Luke Garner will start the game in the back row for the Panthers and Matt Eisenhuth goes to the bench in a late switch. The club's five NSW players will not back up on Saturday with coach Ivan Cleary citing the lack of flights from Perth to Auckland and the toll of travel for the decision.

Numbers Game

  • The Warriors are chasing consecutive wins against the Panthers for the first time since 2011-12.
  • The Panthers have not played in Auckland since Round 15, 2019.
  • The Panthers have won eight of their past nine games against the Warriors.
  • The Warriors have won four of their five games played in New Zealand this season.
