Fresh off re-signing with the Sharks, star winger Cassie Staples has outlined her burning desire to win a premiership at the club.
Earlier this year, Staples extended her time at Cronulla until at least the end of 2025 after playing a key role in the run to last season’s grand final.
It was an easy decision for the 32-year-old, who is eager to kick off the season with a blockbuster match against the Eels at Sharks Stadium this Thursday night.
"I've got a really special group of girls here," Staples told Sharks Media.
"I'm really grateful for a third year (at the club). I'm hoping we can finish it off and get the cherry on top this year."
While not dwelling on the past, the senior player outlined how grand final heartbreak is motivating the team to lift the trophy.
"This year we want to go to that next level," Staples continued.
"I think we got a taste of it last year and we know what we can do and what we can achieve, but it's just pushing again to that next level."
After playing for Fiji and representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games in rugby sevens, Staples is renowned as a consummate professional. Coming into this campaign, she saw no reason for the team to overhaul their preparation.
"It's just about enhancing and amplifying it (pre-season) to the next level. It's been a massive focus for us ... We know what we're capable of," she said.
"This pre-season has been tough. It's always challenging, but it's been really, really positive and we're building a really strong group here for the season ahead.
"We are just a really connected group, and as we get a taste of it more and more each season, we become closer. It's so important to have a special connection off the field as much as it is on the field."
Solidifying her decision to stick with the Sharks, Staples declared Cronulla her home after living in the Sutherland Shire for 12 years.
"It means something rather than just going to another club," she said.
"When you’re wearing a jersey that you're connected to the area and its home for you, it's very special."
